چکیده

Field collected, first generation female Aedes cantator were shown to produce heterogeneous eggs that exhibit variable hatch in response to serial inundations and cold conditioning in the laboratory. Nearly 85% of the egg batches exhibited some hatch with the first flooding, representing 69.4% of the total overall hatch. However, 56% of the same egg batches displayed further hatch with subsequent floodings and 34% showed partial hatch before and after cold conditioning. The significance of these findings is discussed in relation to the biology of Ae. cantator.

Influence of the Length of Storage on Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) Egg Viability

Aedes aegypti (L.) is one of the most important arboviral vectors worldwide. Vector control is targeted at immature and adult stages; however, eggs are resistant to desiccation and may repopulate treated areas long after treatment ceases. We investigated the effect of age on Ae. aegypti egg hatching rates using newly colonized populations (F2) from an arid region. We found a strongly negative a...

Comparing Aedes vigilax Eggshell Densities in Saltmarsh and Mangrove Systems with Implications for Management

Aedes vigilax (Skuse), a nuisance and disease vector, is prolific in intertidal wetlands in Australia. Aedine mosquitoes oviposit directly onto substrate. The eggshells are relatively stable spatially and temporally, providing an estimate of mosquito larval production. The aims of the research were to compare, at a general level, oviposition in mangroves and saltmarshes, and to compare oviposit...

Egg hatching of Aedes mosquitoes during successive floodings in a Rift Valley fever endemic area in Kenya.

Floodwater Aedes breeding habitats in central Kenya were sequentially flooded to determine the numbers of mosquito eggs hatching during each flooding. Approximately 90% of the larvae sampled during 4 floodings emerged during the initial flooding. The number of Aedes eggs hatching during the second flooding was lowest of all 4 floodings, and no significant differences in the amount of egg hatchi...

The Highs and Lows of Making a Bucket List—Quantifying Potential Mosquito Breeding Habitats in Metropolitan Backyards

While the development of land for residential housing along the Swan and Canning Rivers in Perth, WA, Australia has reduced natural mosquito breeding sites, the role of backyard container breeding remains a relatively unknown factor. Local Governments responsible for these areas focus management and control efforts on low lying, tidally driven mosquito habitats to control Aedes vigilax (Skuse) ...
